In December 1904 Cadillac released details of its long-rumored new four cylinder car. This impressive new model was called the Cadillac Model "D", and it would be the company's premium product for the 1905 model year.
Introduction of the new Model "D" market a sharp and significant swing by Cadillac away from its own well-established verhicle market, namely that for moderately priced single-cylinder cars.
The introduction of the luxurious new Model "D", however, would in no way cut into Cadillac's sales of single-cylinder cars. For 1905 Cadillac would offer its customersa choice of no less than three separate series series of one-cylinder automobiles. These weredestignated Models "B", "E" and "F".
The big Model "D" Cadillac for 1905 was offered in only one body style, a suprbly engineered five-passenger, side entrance touring car. Built on a 100 inch wheelbase, Cadillac' new flagship car was powered by a Leland-built in-line four-cylinder engineof 301 cubic inch displacement.
It was rated at 30 horsepower- more than three times as powerful as the company's populair single-cylinder models. TheModel "D" boasted a top speed of 50 miles an hour. The wood-framed body ported small doors for elegantentry into the rear seats.
For an extra $250, buyers could specify a body with some weight-saving aluminium panels. A top was still an extra-cost luxery.
